Helping Teens In Crisis

Operation SafeHouse was established in 1990 to provide emergency shelter to runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth ages 11-17 in Riverside County, CA. The 21 day emergency shelter provides youth with food, individual, group, and family counseling, life skills and on-site education.

In 2000, in response to the growing need for services for older homeless youth, SafeHouse established the Main Street Transitional Living Program for youth ages 18-21 who were aging out of foster care and/or homeless. The 18-month program was designed to connect older homeless youth with services, education, life skills, counseling, and employment opportunities in order to move youth from homelessness into permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

Our two core programs have been so successful that we expanded into the eastern portion of our county to provide a second youth emergency shelter and transitional living program in Thousand Palms. Other expansions include; a Street Outreach Program for entrenched street youth, the Safe Place Program, a 4-bed emergency shelter for older homeless youth ages 18-24, an anonymous crisis text line, and three mental health programs that are school based to assist youth with undiagnosed mental illnesses, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and identity issues. SafeHouse is also the co-founder of the Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force along with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and provides shelter and long-term case management for all youth under the age of 18 in Riverside County.

Program Goals:

• Provide youth with immediate counseling and intervention services for variable and multiple needs (inner conflict resolution, child abuse / neglect, substance abuse, etc.)

• Reunite youth with their family (family preservation and reunification) or a safe and stable environment

• Fostering self-reliance and responsibility.

SafeHouse has been awarded many accolades over the last 30 years. Most recently the 2016, State of California Non-Profit of the Year and in 2019, The Department of Probation Juvenile Justice Award for our work with youth through our text app. SafeHouse currently has a 95% success rate at reunification for youth under the age of 18 and 80% success rate for older homeless youth moving on to permanent housing.
